Zelenskyy Warns of Air Defense Shortages as US Focus Shifts to Iran War

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed concern over a growing shortage of antimissile defenses, warning that reduced availability of key systems is increasing Ukraine's vulnerability to Russian missile attacks.

In an interview broadcast on Sunday, Zelenskyy said Ukraine is facing difficulties obtaining sufficient antiballistic missile capabilities and suggested that changes in US priorities have contributed to the challenge.

"We don't see enough missiles in production in the United States ... we have a deficit with antiballistic. This is a big problem," Zelenskyy said.

According to reports, he argued that limited missile production capacity could have broader consequences beyond Ukraine, potentially affecting security needs in other regions, including the Middle East.

Zelenskyy revealed that he had appealed directly to American leaders for assistance, stating, "I sent a letter to the White House and Congress of the United States, and I hope that they will understand and will answer, respond."

The Ukrainian president also suggested that Washington's increased focus on developments in the Middle East has slowed diplomatic efforts related to the war in Ukraine, with US officials concentrating on the conflict involving Iran.

Discussing prospects for negotiations with Russia, Zelenskyy maintained that stronger international measures are necessary to create conditions for meaningful talks.

"I think we need more sanctions. I think we need more pressure," he said.

Zelenskyy added that he remains willing to hold direct discussions with Vladimir Putin if the Russian leader is prepared to engage, but emphasized that increased sanctions and sustained international pressure would be essential before any serious progress toward a settlement could be achieved.
