US, European allies state deadline for Iran nuclear deal talks
Sources familiar with the matter revealed that this decision was made during a phone call on Monday between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the foreign ministers of the three European nations. Should no agreement be reached by the specified time, the European countries intend to invoke the “snapback” provision. This mechanism would lead to the automatic reinstatement of all United Nations Security Council sanctions that had previously been lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal.
The purpose of the call was to align diplomatic strategies regarding both the potential use of the snapback and the broader approach to nuclear negotiations with Tehran, the sources indicated.
Two of those familiar with the conversation noted that the European participants plan to reach out to Iran in the near future. Their message will reportedly emphasize that the snapback sanctions can still be avoided—provided Iran takes actions that ease global concerns about its nuclear activities. These actions may include reauthorizing oversight by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Another step under consideration, according to one of the sources, is the possible removal from Iran of approximately 400 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% purity, which is currently stored at specific facilities.
