Israel conducts Iran-associated pledge to Russia

(MENAFN) Israel has given Russia assurances that it will ensure the safety of Russian personnel working at Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed. Speaking on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on Thursday, Peskov stated that President Vladimir Putin had mentioned this understanding with Israel during recent discussions.

Peskov emphasized that despite ongoing conflicts in the region, Russia maintains strong partnerships with both Iran and Israel. However, he acknowledged there are still unresolved issues that require further mediation.

Putin had previously told international news agencies that Moscow and Israel had agreed to measures guaranteeing the safety of Russian specialists involved in constructing two additional units at the Bushehr plant. He noted that any solution to the Iran-Israel conflict must respect Iran’s interests while also ensuring Israel’s security.

Russia has long supported Iran’s civilian nuclear program, particularly through its involvement in completing the Bushehr power plant. Originally begun by German companies prior to the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the project was revived in the 1990s under Russia’s Rosatom. The first reactor went online in 2011, and construction on Units 2 and 3 is currently reported at 17% completion.

Tensions escalated after Israel launched airstrikes on Iran last Friday, alleging Tehran was nearing nuclear weapons capability—an accusation Iran denied before retaliating with drone and missile attacks. Russia condemned the Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities as “illegal” and warned of the risk of a potential nuclear disaster.

Israel’s attacks reportedly targeted uranium enrichment sites, centrifuges, and laboratories essential for converting uranium gas into metal, according to Israeli sources and the International Atomic Energy Agency. Moscow’s Foreign Ministry has criticized these actions as violations of international law and a threat to global security.
